Flower Power

Kaity asked me to crochet the Flower Power rug for her.

This is the as yet unblocked first square

I allowed myself a 1 day break from Kaity's cardigan to play with the first square.

I learned to crochet from my Sainted Grandmother when I was 11. She "Cro-shayed" ripple stitch "Africans" in front of "Her Stories" every afternoon. She rarely missed a grain of the Sands Through the Hourglass to look down at her work, as her hands expertly sped up and down each ripple.

Before she died, each of her children and grandchildren had at least one of her masterpieces. When it was my turn, I remember my excitement, pouring over the pages of her newest Lee Ward's catalog, carefully choosing my color combination.

When I was a little girl, she used her odd balls of yarn to crochet a little doll afghan for me. I wrapped my first child in that afghan to bring him home from the hospital. I sleep wrapped in one of the last afghans she made every night.

Crocheting again is making me feel close to my Grandmother. I'm sharing her gift to me with my daughter. She chose this duck for her first project. image_125.jpg She's crocheting it for Chloe for Easter.
