Blog Spam

Can someone please tell me why the spammers put junk on our blogs? The part I really don't get is where they put it. I could understand if they put it as comments to current entries, where people may actually see it. But every morning I have at least 1 e-mail saying a spammer has posted a comment to my blog, for an entry I posted months ago. Does this happen to everyone else too?

Comments

Angi, I use Jay Allen's program to block spam. If anything does slip through, at the bottom of your notice you get a little thing that allows you to de-Spam the comment. If you don't get it off your site, the spammers can use your site. His program is here: http://www.jayallen.org/projects/mt-blacklist/

Don't forget to update the blacklist every week or so. It's very easy.

Once you despam your site you can use this script to limit the number of days that someone can comment. I think I have 20 days. That script is here:

I guess I handle mine the old-fashioned way (I'm going to look into Char's recommendation). I close the comments for all older entries. Anything that is not on my main page is closed. I had to go through all my entries and turn off the comments, but it seems to be working. Occasionally I will get one that slips through & I just delete & close the entry it was in.
Good luck!

I do the same as Annie, I close the comments. Good luck.

It's only happened to me twice, and yes, both times were in quite old entries. One of them was an innocuous enough comment, but if you clicked on the name, it went to a porn site!! I'm just thankful it's been a rare occurence.
